While the concerns about climate change caused by the release of Carbon Dioxide are gaining momentum, there is also a large group of very serious citizens, politicians and scientists who don't believe that climate change is taking place or will ever take place as the result of an increase of levels of CO2 in the air. Adopt A Ranger wishes to work with all citizens who are concerned about the worldwide eradication of species. So, we would like to specifically speak a word with those people who don't believe in climate change or have their doubts about the validity of the concern. First of all, we like to explicitly express that we respect your viewpoint and that we will NOT try to change your opinion in any way.
Alternatively, we like look for common ground among what we shall refer to as "believers" and "non-believers".
Over the next few decades, we are going to see a worldwide increase in energy needs, generated by fast growing middle classes in mega-developing countries like China and India. An increase over the next decade or two of the middle classes in those 2 countries alone from a current 10% to 20% of their populations will increase the people who can effort cars from 230 million consumers to 460 million consumers, time and a half as many consumers as in the USA. During that period, the pressure on energy resources will increase dramatically, driving fuel prices up to ever increasing levels, thus effecting everybody's purchase power. One of the most effective ways to slow down that pressure - as well as the increase of fuel prices - is by becoming more energy efficient in everything we do, thus reducing our energy and environmental footprints. We think that the "believers" and "non-believers" can find each other in the benefits of making our societies more energy efficient.
Another "common ground" may be found on the benefits of the use of renewable resources. Suppose that new technologies can be found to generate energy from renewable resources at affordable prices for society and without serious environmental and social impacts. We presume that both the "believers" and "non-believers" could find each other in considering such technologies as beneficial for society. Let's not go into the technical details now of which method could work and which ones may not. Let's just agree that if such technologies can be found, that society as a whole would benefit from them.
So, now let's talk about the most controversial issue between the "believers" and "non-believers": Carbon Dioxide release compensation of offset. If you don't believe in the effect of CO2 on the climate (which we respect), this to you must be the ultimate waste of money. Imagine, some way or the other being taxed for something that you don't believe is happening at all. It does not matter whether you are being taxed directly by your government or by corporations that compensate their carbon dioxide release, like airlines and electricity companies. In the end it is your money that pays for something you don't believe in. The bad news is, that this is happening, whether you like it or not and it will only increase.
Adopt A Ranger feels that it should offer such corporations to use the compensation finances to prevent natural forests from being converted into agricultural fields and being burnt up in the process. From the point of carbon dioxide reduction in the air, it is far more cost effective than planting new plantations, while at the same time it would contribute to financing the conservation of millions species. Now if you are a "non-believer" who warmly supports the conservation of nature, this should make you feel a little bit better. As we have shown on the main page of our website (http://www.adopt-a-ranger.org/carbon_offset.htm) it would cost less than $20/ha/year to protect an area with rangers and less than $0.5/ha/year. Assuming a trust fund with a rate of return of 7%, it would take about $7 to permanently protect a hectare in an area of 1,000,000 has. We would think that many "non-believers" could still feel that "their" money charged or taxed through carbon offset funding would be spent through a conservation programme undertaken by Adopt A Ranger. If you are a believer, it should make you very happy if people can't believe in climate change or in the impact of CO2 on the environment, are interested in helping finance the conservation of nature, while at the same time contributing to what you believe will avoid the release of a considerable amount of CO2 in the atmosphere!
These are just a few good reasons to help finance rangers through Adopt A Ranger! Other reasons can be found here: http://www.adopt-a-ranger.org/xtra_benefits.htm
Tell us what you think, especially if you have your doubts about climate change! _________________ Dr. Ir. Daan Vreugdenhil

Stretching Exercises
Doing a couple of stretching exercises and swings using a two clubs or one of the golf equipment could help in loosening up your muscles and joints. The worst hazards would be the lakes and the ponds, because if you hit the ball into one. Ishiner |
